Mothers Need Nests Too

When we think of a nest, we often picture tiny chicks tucked safely beneath their mother’s wings. We think of protection, warmth, and the care that helps young lives grow strong. But perhaps we have been looking at the nest all wrong.

What if the nest isn’t just for the chicks?

What if mothers need nests too?

A mother hen spends her days tending to others. She keeps her eggs warm, protects her chicks from danger, teaches them where to find food, and gathers them close when storms come. Her attention is always on those who depend on her. Yet she can only do these things because she has a nest—a place that supports her while she supports others.

Human mothers are much the same.

Mothers are often expected to be everything to everyone. They carry the weight of their children’s needs, their families’ worries, and the endless responsibilities of daily life. They are the comforters, the protectors, the planners, the teachers, and the cheerleaders. Yet too often, we forget that those who spend their lives caring for others need care themselves.

Every mother needs a nest.

Not necessarily a physical place, but a community. A circle of support. A village that surrounds her when life becomes overwhelming. A friend who listens without judgment. A neighbour who lends a helping hand. A family member who steps in when strength is running low. A community that reminds her she does not have to carry everything alone.

The saying “it takes a village to raise a child” is true, but perhaps we should also remember that it takes a village to support a mother.

When mothers are surrounded by encouragement, practical help, understanding, and compassion, they are able to thrive. And when mothers thrive, children thrive too. The nest that holds a mother steady becomes the foundation upon which an entire family can grow.

At times, life can feel lonely. Many mothers sit quietly carrying burdens that no one else can see. They may smile through exhaustion, push through uncertainty, and continue giving long after their own reserves have run dry. In those moments, the village matters most.

A strong nest is not built by one pair of wings. It is built twig by twig, act by act, person by person. Every meal delivered, every encouraging message sent, every offer of help, every moment of kindness becomes part of the structure that holds someone up.

Perhaps that is one of the greatest lessons we can learn from the nest. None of us were meant to do life alone. We all need somewhere to rest, somewhere to belong, and people who will gather around us when the weight becomes too much.

So the next time you see a nest, remember that it is not only a place where young ones are raised. It is also a reminder that caregivers need care, that mothers need support, and that even the strongest among us need somewhere safe to land.

Because mothers need nests too.
